Guilty as Charged
I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the most eco-friendly person. I drink out of way too many water bottles, use way too many plastic bags and I’ve recently realized it’s time to change. I know what you guys might be thinking. Cindy babe it’s 2019. This should have happened years ago! But if I’m being honest, a few months back I wasn’t thinking about our planet or about sustainability. It wasn’t until I saw the topic come up more and more on my Instagram feed.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE our planet. Like really love the place we get to call home especially here in Miami. But I’ve been so ignorant to the harm and damage we’re doing. So I want to do my part and share five ways we can all live a more sustainable life. It might not keep the icebergs from melting or solve all our problems but it’s a step in the right direction I think!
through and for
So this was one of the main reasons I started to become more and more curious about sustainable living. I came across my friend and her hubby’s platform, through and for and just found myself scrolling through each of their posts, wanting to find out how I can reduce my waste. Often times, we hear the word sustainability and we think of it as being this really hard thing where we throw away every single product, clothes, ANYTHING that we own. But it’s all about baby steps. Start with one thing like taking a faster shower or better yet installing a low flow shower head to save water (and mula).
PS. follow through and for because 1. they live out what they preach, 2. they’re an amazing resource for anyone starting out in this journey, and 3. they have the BEST IGTV. Seriously! I can watch em all day lol.
Carpool Carpool Carpool
There’s not much to say about this one except DO IT! Alex and I carpool all the time plus we get to spend a few extra minutes out of the day that we otherwise wouldn’t have if we took separate cars. It’s a win-win.
Shop Second Hand
Transitioning from fast fashion to slow fashion doesn’t have to be an overnight thing. This one intimidates me BUT give thrifting or second-hand shopping a chance! It’s so much fun, I recently went with a group of girlfriends and we found such cute pieces. It reminded me of when I use to go with my mom. If shopping IRL isn’t your thing, check out thredup, it’s the largest Consignment & Thrift Store online.
Use Clothes/Rags Instead of Paper Towels
This one is definitely gonna be implemented in our new home. Save on paper and use rags or clothes around the house! Made a mess? Use a rag! Cleaning that mirror? Use a rag! Drying your hands? Use a rag! I don’t know about you guys but in my Hispanic household growing up, my mom would said “esa toalla no es para limpiar”, in other words, that towel isn’t to clean it’s decoration. So that forced us to use paper towels…ALOT.
Open Your Blinds + Use More Natural Sunlight
Okay so I really love doing this one! Natural sunlight is my BFF and it’s daylight savings time! The sun is out & beaming all the time. Save on energy and use natural light whenever you can! Plus it’s a natural mood booster. Exposure to sunlight increases the brain’s release of serotonin, a hormone associated with boosting a person’s mood and helping us feel calm and focused.
So like I said, you’ve probably heard about one or all of these things but I want to encourage you to try and be more conscious and more aware of the world we call home especially Miami, a city that’s hugely impacted by global warming. Tell me what you like to do to lead a more eco-friendly life!
Ohh and a quick pro tip: FPL has some great ways you can save energy & a few bucks on your bill.
Till next time friends, love you!
